There has been a lot of debate on India’s laws and rules and regulations. Some say they are too liberal while others argue they are too strict. Well, I am not here to engage in THAT debate. I am not giving you any opinion here. I am here to remind you of one thing that we can all agree about India- it is FULL OF SURPRISES! And here are few surprising things you can actually get away with in India!

You Can Get Away With Traffic Violation

There goes the king of all vehicles!

Provided, you are riding a cycle! YES! If you are riding a cycle in India, the traffic rules simply do not apply on you. I mean of course, I suggest you to follow the rules for your own sake. But hey, let’s say you violate a rule by mistake, the police CANNOT penalise you. Why? Because your humble cycle just doesn’t fall under the Motor Vehicles Act. Guess what? The non motor vehicles like a cycles or rickshaws are the real MVPs on Indian roads 😉

You Can Get Away With Suicide

PROVIDED, YOU DIE! Yeah, there’s an actual law (Section 309 of the IPC) in the Indian constitution that criminalises suicide attempt. The keyword being *attempt* because if you’re successful, you go free! (Oh, okay now that’s deep one constitution sir/ma’am) Turns out, Indian law can be pretty spiritual, so to say. How wonderful no? Just imagine being so fucked up that you attempt suicide. Imagine, failing at it. Imagine, having one more reason to commit suicide now- you are a criminal! So, now you know how to get away with suicide in India!

You Can Get Away With Rape

As per current law, a wife is presumed to deliver perpetual consent to have sex with her husband after entering into marital relations.

PROVIDED, YOU ARE MARRIED!

So, we started with a funny traffic violation. We then threw some light upon the insanely weird suicide law. And then here we are- discussing rape. Yeah, even rape is legal in India provided you fulfil a teeny-weeny eligibility of “marriage”. Here’s the truth- Exception 2 in the Section 375 exempts unwilling sexual intercourse between a husband and a wife over fifteen years of age from Section 375’s definition of “rape”. In short, according to Indian Law system, it is not rape if the rapist is your married partner. This is more of a “shock” than a “surprise” but yes, it is the truth!

I am sorry if I am leaving you with a bad taste here. But the truth sometimes does taste like that!
