If You Don’t Like Your Job, Create A New One!

Here’s how to create a new job in your existing company.

Okay, so the situation here is pretty common. You are insanely bored of your current job and it makes you want to leave your current company. But then you also genuinely like your company and the work it is doing within the industry. It definitely sounds like stalemate. You cannot leave the company. And if you don’t, you will have to carry on with your boring job with no opportunity to grow. But have you ever considered creating your own opportunity at your current company? That way, you can not only continue working at the company you like but also find a new, more interesting job with excellent growth prospects. But how do you create a new job?

Where There Is A Problem, There Is An Opportunity

Think about what YOU can offer to eliminate the given problem.

The plain and simple rule of finding new opportunities is to find the existing PROBLEMS. Where there is a problem, there is an opportunity to find a solution. And that solution could be a brand new job in your existing company. So all you have to do is find out one of the most crucial challenges or problems that your company is currently facing. Once you have you identified the problem; try matching your skills to it. Make sure you have an actual plan of how YOU can fill the gap and eliminate the problem.

The “plan” would include everything from the new job description to what happens to your existing job roles and responsibilities. You have to make sure that your boss gets convinced on why this new job is NEEDED.

Pitching The Idea

The important questions are- Who? When? What? As far as the “who” is concerned, do not straight away run to your boss/director. Take it slowly. To begin with, present your idea to you immediate boss- the supervisor. When? Choose a time when your supervisor can truly concentrate on what you are saying. For example, avoid bringing it up in middle of some important work or just before a looming deadline. What do you exactly say? Apart from thoroughly explaining the problem, the solution, and the plan; you can also go ahead and be honest about it. Tell them how you think you have mastered you current job and there is no more room for development there. But make sure that the centre of discussion remains why the company NEEDS this new job. If you supervisor finds it interesting, seek their guidance with respect to two things- 1. How the plan/idea can be improved? 2. Who should you go to with this idea and when? They will know better!

It is also possible to receive negative feedback from your supervisor. In that case, leave him/her with the idea to think upon and request a more specific feedback.

As soon as you receive a “GO!” from your supervisor, give the same presentation to the decision makers. This time, be more confident and go ahead with more specific details. Again, focus on why THE COMPANY NEEDS this new job.
