Although it is healthy, most students agree to the fact that good, tasty food provides them with energy to carry on with the pressure of studies and examination. Sreetama Chakraborty shared her experience of her hostel life at the Welcome Group Graduate School of Hotel Administration, Manipal. She said, “Maggi by itself is tasty but was not a healthy option and I hated the food in the canteen. So, I got some of my favorite veggies from the market on weekends and boiled them together with Maggi, added some butter and I loved this soup, especially on rainy or cold winter days.”

Soham Chakraborty, from Oxford Dental College, Bangalore, says, “I am not very fond of south Indian food, so it’s a problem for me. But I love bread, so I often make a sandwich with tomatoes, cucumber, onion and some lettuce and add 2 boiled eggs to it to complete my meal.”

Rupsha Bhadra at the Asian College of Journalism in Chennai says, “Life at the hostel in Chennai if difficult, especially for a Bengali who is also a foodie. My own comfort food here, that’s healthy as well as filling, is puffed rice and yogurt. Sometimes I also add some dry fruits like cashew and raisins to it and it makes a good meal.”

Sourav Saharay from North Bengal Medical College, in West Bengal says, “We often boycott hostel food and make our own dishes. The healthiest out of them is our Russian salad, stuffed with vegetables and yummy mayonnaise, with some salt pepper sprinkled on it. However, an even healthier option for those who love yogurt is to replace the mayo with some yogurt and salt.”

Shreyan Saha studies pharmacy at the JSS College of Pharmacy in Ooty and says, “I hardly like to have healthy food. However, I often get readymade idli mao or batter available in stores which just need to be put on heat to create idlis and I have idli with some tomato ketchup on days I do not wish to have hostel food.”
