Why You Must Learn To Have Fun In Food

Having food isn’t sufficient; you also need to learn to have fun with food.

I remember as a kid I hated lauki or bottle gourd as it’s called. I am yet to find a kid who loves lauki in its simplicity. So my mother, like any other mother added variety to it and camouflaged it in so many amazing ways. She would serve the lauki in the form of delicious koftas, sweet lauki halwa, lauki thepla, lauki paratha, lauki chana, lauki kheer, lauki raita, lauki pakora etc. Believe me, they tasted yummy! Not once did I realise that I was eating the lauki I so hated!

I haven’t cooked long enough, like my grandmother or mother. But I strongly believe that food should not only taste delicious but also look delicious. The sight of a scrumptious looking dish instantly arouses appetite. Food can satisfy you only if it entices your taste buds.

And so it important for us learn to have fun with the food we eat. It is important to stay clear from attaching taboos with food rather love food for what it is. Who would relish veggies, fruit salad, steamed vegetables, a bowl of bland quinoa or tasteless meals? But even the blandest food can be made fun and interesting to eat!

Over the years I have learned that we should start spending more time on preparing and making meals. This gives you creativity and ideas to make food tastier, more unique and fun.

You also need to stop stressing about counting calories and grouping food into – what you can eat and what you can’t. This is frustrating, time-consuming and sapping your energy while removing the fun from eating food.

Instead, focus on overall lifestyle and the eating choices you make. This will give you the flexibility to try new things and enjoy everything in moderation. Eliminate the boredom out of healthy eating by spicing it up with variety.

You can start by cutting food in different patterns. You can make the food more colorful because a good color kindles appetite. Make food savory and dessert-worthy with spices, flavors, and herbs. Learn different ways to plate food to make it appear scrumptious.

Always experiment with different food groups, mix-and-match, blend and combine – and be sure to have a treat.

So no matter how daunting it may appear at the start, learn to enjoy food and have fun with it.
