Hits And Misses Of Bollywood In 2017

Ittefaq, Padmavati, Tumari Sullu, Fukrey and Tiger Zinda Hai to end the year

The Bollywood releases of 2017 have been a mixed bag, with some super hits and some near misses. Since its the time of the year when we reflect on the good times and the bad times we’ve had in the year, we thought we would reflect on what has worked in Bollywood too.

Here’s a look at some of the highest grossers of 2017 so far:

Baahubali: The Conclusion

Baahubali: The Conclusion has set an unrealistic benchmark this year. Trade analysts have said that the Hindi version of the film has gone up way past the 500 crore mark. The film has been a game changer. It broke all barriers of being a regional film and gave regional films a whole new meaning and status.

Jolly LLB 2

The fact that Akshay Kumar makes sure his films are made on a lower budget and quickly too always works in his favor added to the fact that he has a huge fan following too. That’s probably the reason why his films cross the 100 crore mark. Similarly, his film Jolly LLB 2 did well at the box office and it is being said that it made four times the amount that his first Jolly LLB did.

Hindi Medium

Hindi Medium technically does not fit into the 100 crore bracket but the film did well in its own bracket. This sweet simple small film which was made on a budget of around Rs 23 crore was a complete surprise package. It did a business of over Rs 60 crore, even though it did not open to good review. What worked for the film was good word of mouth publicity.

Badrinath Ki Dulhania

It was not just the fact that Badrinath Ki Dulhania released on the Holi weekend that helped the film become a success at the box office but also the Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt that worked with the audience, since both Varun and Alia have a huge following, especially among the youth. All those who had earlier watched the two of them in Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, went back to the theaters to watch the pair in Badrinath Ki Dulhania.

Toilet Ek Prem Katha

Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar starter, Toilet Ek Prem Katha, which was inspired by PM Narendra Modi’s Clean India Campaign, is said to have been made on a budget of Rs 24 crore including promotions but this film took the box office by storm and even outran Akshay’s Jolly LLB 2. The film not only did well at the box office but also brought about some positive changes in India and made people more aware of the issue of open defecation.

Judwaa 2

Varun Dhawan proved to be second time lucky with his out and out entertainer, Judwaa 2. The film is said to have made a profit of 68.03 crores. Even though the film opened to some mixed reviews, fans thronged to the theaters to watch the film. The film was a much needed hit for the industry after a series of misses.

Golmaal Again

After the super duper hit Baahubali 2, if any film has managed to come anywhere close to it this year, it was Golmaal Again. The film gave the Hindi film industry a reason to celebrate after some dismal Fridays. Since it’s release on Diwali day, this rib-tickling comedy has already done a business of Rs 37.63 crore!

The success of Judwaa 2 and Golmaal Again proves that all that the audience need is “Entertainment, entertainment, entertainment!” like Vidya Balan rightly said in The Dirty Picture. The massy kind of films is what has worked at the box office so far this year.

November and December will have some big films like Itefaq, Padmavati, Tumari Sullu, Fukrey and Tiger Zinda Hai and we’re hoping the year ends with a bang!
