In terms of producing music, Bollywood is so prolific that every day we wake up to new song releases. But off late, it seems like what we are waking up to every other day is another homage paid to another old song or another music director of the yesteryears since all the highly promoted music that big budget movies are putting out are remixes and remakes. The newest release from the upcoming movie Total Dhamaal titled Paisa Yeh Paisa is no exception.

The track is originally from the 1980 Rishi Kapoor starrer superhit movie Karz. Thanks to the genius of Lakshmikant-Pyarelal, to this day, the movie is lauded for its extraordinary music and the original songs have never really died out of vogue. Quite normally then, remaking any song from this movie is a serious gamble. Last time someone tried to do it on a big scale was Himesh Reshamia, with Ek Haseena Thi Ek Deewana Tha and we all know how that went.

Needless to say, the re-rendered track from Total Dhamaal has not really added anything to the original composition. The singers Dev Negi, Subhro Ganguly and Arpita Chakraborty have done their best but considering that the original was rendered by none other than Kishore Kumar, it is really hard for anyone to match that level, let alone providing some added flavour. In an attempt to set the “remake” apart from the original, music director Gourov-Roshin have just altered the main beats of the song, shifting it from the jazzy drums to something very similar to the Vengaboys’ To Brasil beats. Thanks to the big budget of the movie, the music video is all swanky. The main aesthetic is glitter- lots of it. But what shines the brightest among it all is undoubtedly Madhuri Dixit. Her screen presence and charming expressions are what make this music video worth a replay.

Owing to the comeback of the iconic pair of Madhuri Dixit and Anil Kapoor on screen, especially in the 30th year since their highly grossing movie Ram-Lakhan, Total Dhamaal has already stirred up quite an anticipation, especially among older movie goers. Looks like Bollywood is in a period of reminiscence for the most part now. Backed by four different production companies, namely Ajay Devgn FFlims, Fox Star Studios, Pen India Limited and Maruti International, the movie will certainly be an extravaganza. Directed by Indra Kumar, Total Dhamaal is slated to release this 22nd February.
