Out on the Speed Records YouTube channel right now is a new music video for a song sung by Shirley Setia, called Naiyo Jaana. This Punjabi-Hindi number has a romantic premise, and the video stars Shirley herself. It was released on YouTube on December 6, and has already managed to grab more than 5 million views.
Naiyo Jaana is a song about separation. As its name suggests, it’s a plea asking one’s lover to not leave. The chorus hence goes, “Naiyo jaana, naiyo jaana. Naiyo jaana mujhse tu door mahiya. Naiyo rehna, naiyo rehna. Naiyo rehna tere bagair ranjheya.” The rest of the lyrics follow the same pattern, but are not what one would call very impressive.
Lines like “Ki tere bin mar jaana. Bin tere bikhar jaana. Jee karda main tere naal. Is pal mein simat jaanaa” do not manage to evoke many emotions due to their generic nature. Shirley Setia’s voice is wonderful as ever, but a chorus potion in the middle of the song sounds weirdly out of place. Ravi Singhal, who has composed as well as written the lyrics for Naiyo Jaana, has done a good job, but there’s nothing extraordinary in the track.
The music video is what the most alluring part of the song is. It has been shot in a small picturesque town, and shows a school-time love story, which is being reminisced by Shirley Setia who has grown up now. This video has been shot beautifully, and Shirley Setia has proved once again, that she is a performer; not just a singer.
The pyjama singer has been regularly releasing singles since the past few years. Recently, she had sung yet another Punjabi song called Koi Vi Nahi, along with Gurnazar. Released in April earlier this year, this one has become a huge hit, having garnered more than 86 million views on YouTube.
