A few years back a song called “Love Story”, by the American singer and songwriter Taylor Swift was released and it immediately made into the playlist of every adolescent. “Fearless” easily emerged as the best selling album in the United States back in 2009 and it even earned her four Grammys too. Taylor Swift has traveled quite a distance since then. She writes narrative songs about her personal life and is one of the leading contemporary recording artists. Her subsequent albums – “Speak now” and “Red” did exceedingly well. She released her sixth studio album last year and one of the tracks “look what you made me do” has already been topping US and UK charts. But she unraveled yet another number – “Delicate” and it is trending on number 1 on YouTube will 29 million views and counting.
The entire album is a brief commentary on Swift’s present state of mind with regard to media, life, and relationships. “Delicate” thus fits perfectly in the framework, for the entire video goes much further than is immediately apparent. On the surface level, she is just another woman waiting to meet her crush. She turns invisible via a magical note and she utilizes this power to the utmost.
On the deeper level, the song is a metaphor for Taylor’s disappearance from the public arena in recent times. It shows the singer’s disgust of always being in public scrutiny. She is carefree and sings
“My reputation’s never been worse so/you must like me for me.”
Taylor Swift has recently skipped awards and ceremonies. She has toned it down considerably and is lying low. In this video, she expresses her desire to be invisible so that she can finally do things she wants to without being judged for them. Well, a celeb’s life is surely difficult.
The video, however, ends on a positive note with Taylor coming back to visibility. This speaks perhaps more of Swift’s brand new defiant attitude; the only way to deal with the media and fans who cannot respect her sense of privacy. In the video, she cannot care less about anyone else but her crush. The video also incorporates some very goofy dance moves as Taylor dances like no one’s watching.
She is currently preoccupied with her upcoming Reputation tour for which Camila Cabello, the Havana singer and Charli XCX will support her. She has explained her absence to her fans saying that she is engaged in the preparations for this tour. We hope the tour is a massive success. As for her next album, we shall wait in sheer anticipation!
