Champaner – Pavagadh, The Hidden Gem In Gujarat

The enigma of Champaner and the story of its revival

The story of Champaner- Pavagadh begins in the 8th century B.C. when it was ruled by King Vanraj Chavda. It got its name from the igneous rocks of the region which glowed like the flame of the forest or Champa flowers. The capital of Gujarat, it was ruled by the Rajputs for a couple of centuries.

Champaner’s story changed drastically when it was invaded by Mughal king Humayun and the capital of Gujarat was shifted to Ahmedabad, leaving Champaner in neglect.

To the traveller curious for trivia, the film ‘Lagaan’ was set in Champaner, though the history of the place will take you back to a time much further back than the modern colonial struggles.

The intrigue of its story became a cause to celebrate when the site was rediscovered and restored. It was recognised as a historical marvel by UNESCO, which declared it as a heritage site, and rightly so as the area holds some of the architectural genius of its ancient times.

From paved roads to water harvesting, the residents of this city had everything planned. The most impressive structure to be found in this area is the Jami Masjid, inside the fort. Elegant and well-preserved, the mosque has a confluence of Hindu and Islamic styles in its architecture.

Thinking of the time then, and the lapse of history, one can only wonder whether we leave in the most modern times, or are we only a reflection of what our forefathers achieved before us.

If you are wary of climbing the 2000 odd steps to the Maha Kalika Temple at the top of Pavagadh hill, you can take the adventurous ride on a rope way.
