Why Puducherry Must Be On Every Traveller’s Bucket List

A solo traveller recounts the joys of the colonial town of Puducherry and why you must visit it at least once.

Puducherry has remained as the last intact remnant of India’s colonial history. With a special alliance with the French Government, the town has maintained its glory and French grandeur even today. Many Europeans, who have made it their home, continue to follow Sri Aurobindo and run non-profit organisations for the locals.

Pondicherry was destined to be one-of-its-kind when Sri Aurobindo retired from nationalist freedom struggle and set up his ashram here. Since then, many waylaid travellers and retired Europeans flock to the ashram for spiritual understanding. It is this ambience that pervades the idyllic town along the coast of Bay of Bengal.

Easily accessible by road and air via Chennai, Pondicherry affords budget accommodation to travellers of all hues. Hostel and BnB facilities by locals are aplenty. You can even hire bicycles, if you want to explore the town at your own pace.

As one walks along the breezy and wide seaside promenade, one can visit the Romain Rolland Library, Pondicherry Museum and one of India’s first press establishments.Other popular destinations include the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Arulmigu Temple and the Goubert market. The market is a delight for its local produce and ware. The Paradise beach near the town is a great place for swimmers and surfers.

With a different culture, comes the different cuisine. This is the best place to try French cuisine in India. Eateries like La Villa, Café des Arts, and Lighthouse are a must visit, not only for the food, but also their enchanting ambience and décor. They will transport you to a simpler time. With the exempted tax structure, booze is also cheaper, and goes well with the cuisine.

The streets with bougainvillea and yellow washed houses seem from a different time zone. You can walk through to discover pretty cafes, art galleries and boutiques. You can simply take a book and spend hours in a patisserie over a delicious coffee and pastry.

If you can manage to break out of the magic of the town, Auroville is only a bus ride away. The serenity and divinity pervading this golden crusted structure can cleanse any tired soul. Yoga parlours surrounding the place are authentic in their techniques.
