Why Sidhpur In Gujarat Could Be An Instagrammer’s Heaven

The Vohrawad in Sidhpur is an architectural ghost of previous glory

Sidhpur may seem like a movie set that has not been dismantled. The streets are organised in a grid, and are studded on both sides by huge mansions with delicate inlay work. But the mansions are empty. Only sometimes, a woman in traditional Bohri attire may peep through a window.

Even the interior of the houses reminds us of a glorious past

In Sidhpur, the Gujarati Dawoodi Bohra community, largely traders, flourished between 1820 and 1930. They built monumental mansions with stuccoed facades, ornate pilasters, trellised balconies and gabled roofs—perhaps to state, in no uncertain terms, that they had arrived. However, post-Independence the community settled in different parts of the country and overseas in search of greener pastures, and their houses became repositories of a discarded past.

But the mansions are a great opportunity for Instagrammers. Ochre, pink, blue, orange, the colours of the houses play a game with the setting. The streets have a European quality. Only the carvings and intricate work remind you that you are in an area that was known for Gurjar-Pratihara and Rajputana style of work.

The 365-windowed Jhaveri Mansion in Najampura area is a must visit for any traveller. You will be transfixed to the spot with its detailed work and beautiful facades.

The architecture is extended in the nearby town of Kapadvanj. It has the Battris kothri-ni-vav, a huge and ancient step-well.

You cannot leave Sidhpur without tasting the famous street dish of ‘chana bateta’.

Sidhpur is about 112 km from Ahmedabad, and is easily accessible by train, bus and taxi. Since it is an off-the-trail destination, choice of accommodation is limited.

So, head to Sidhpur for a great travel experience.
