An important way of making sure you do your best at the interview is to dress the part.

While you don’t need to go out and get yourself the best and biggest brands that you can lay your hands on, what you do need to do is to give some thought to what you will wear, and what you should avoid wearing when you are going for your interview.

Here’s a look at some of the choices that can get you the favorable nod, and others that may not work well with all employers, and is best avoided.

1. Being A Little On The Conservative Side Is Always Best

You may have your own fashion sense which could be hippy, vibrant, very spunky and full of character. However, when you are heading out to an interview, it is safer to dress a little conservative. This does not mean boring, but all it means is that instead of dressing in short skirts, see-through blouses, too tight dresses, shorts or very bold print shirts, you could opt for clothes that are a mix of semi-casual such as shirts with jeans, knee-length skirts with interesting tops, pantsuits, or even dresses that are a comfortable fit. Also, you and your resume should do the talking, instead of your clothes becoming a distraction.

Like Seema Mishra, Senior HR at FDC Limited says, “Your appearance may not make or break your job interview, but it can certainly make things a lot easier for you if you get it right. A neat formal attire is very important if you are going for an interview because it increases the confidence level of a person and will make you feel comfortable. Whether you like it or not, you are judged based on your appearance. If you show up for an interview or an important meeting looking like you just rolled out of bed, then the person you are meeting with will most probably see you as unprofessional, harming your chances of getting the job.”

2. Pay Attention To Your Perfume

It is very important to smell nice, and no one likes to spend time with someone who is stinking and has a strong body odour. While it is important that you make sure you wear a nice cologne or perfume, also make sure that you do not wear an entire bottle of it. Scents that are floral, slightly woody or have a hint of musk or citrus can be a good choice. Go for something that is not too strong, as it can be difficult for someone who is sensitive to strong scents.

3. Shoes Are Important

Sandals and flip flops will give you that young and fresh vibe, but they are still best left for the beach. To be safe, wear a comfortable pair of heels so that you can meet your potential employers without an awkward walk, and without the fear of teetering over. Sports shoes work great if you are dressing semi-casual with jeans. Flat shoes are also a very good bet.

The best way to dress up for your interview is to dress for the sector you are going for. If it is a fun design house, you can dress up quirky and boho, but if it’s an age-old institution or a brand known for being conservative, dress appropriately.
