Six Ladies Speak About Their Favorite Traditional Breakfast Of Their State

Indian breakfasts are varied, elaborate and tasty

 

A day started without having a satisfactory breakfast, makes the day incomplete for any Indian foodie. Like the diverse culture, tradition, customs and dresses, India also has a wide assortment of food and cuisines which vary from one region or state to the other. Every Indian state has its own traditional cuisine and thus has its own customary breakfast dishes. Here’s what six ladies from six different states spoke to HotFridayTalks.com about their favorite traditional breakfast.

Luchi And Aloo Dum From West Bengal

Tatini Dey, a corporate worker who hails from Kolkata, West Bengal, says, “I love Luchi and aloo dum as my traditional breakfast any given day.”

Luchi is a round, fried bread made from wheat flour and aloo dum is a typical potato curry, prepared with several Bengali spices, and the curry again has several versions to it, according to one’s preferences.

Misal Pav From Maharashtra

Sonali Kothule, who hails from Nashik, Maharashtra, says, “Misal Pav is my favorite traditional Marathi dish for breakfast.”

Pav is the Marathi name given to puffy the round bread. Misal is prepared using sprouted moong beans or lentils and has two parts, the thick curry called “usal” and a watery gravy called “rassa”.

Khotto Idli With Sambar Rasam And Coconut Chutney From Karnataka

“I love the Khotto Idli from my native place the best. To prepare this, we give a small bottle or pipe like shape to leaves of the jackfruit tree and prepare idli in that. I like to have it with sambar, rasam and coconut chutney” says Shwetha Bhat, who is from a town near Udupi, Karnataka.

Idli is made from a batter prepared with rice flour and lentils. Sambar is a curry with vegetables and spices, rasam is a soup made of tamarind, tomatoes and spices as per one’s choice and the coconut chutney is made of ground coconut and curd.

Chitau Pitha From Orissa

“We have several traditional dishes, but my favorite is the Chitau Pitha if you ask about a traditional Oriya breakfast dish, “says Prangya P Das, who belongs to Cuttack in Orissa.

Also known as coconut pancake, Chitau Pitha is made using rice, lentils and coconut. I is generally served with cauliflower curry.

Aloo Paratha, Dahi And Dhania Patta Chutney From Rajasthan

Radhika Indoria, who is originally from Rajasthan, says, “My favorite is Aloo ka paratha with plain dahi or raita and during the season, I love to have it with dania patta chutney (coriander paste)”

Aloo paratha is an Indian bread stuffed with boiled and potatoes. Its best enjoyed with Plain yogurt, or raita (yogurt with preferable seasoning).

Kachori, Sabji, And Sooji Halwa From Uttar Pradesh

“Our breakfast has a mixture of salty and sweet food. I love to eat kachori, sabji and sooji halwa with some achar for breakfast” says Shalini Singh from Mughalsarai, Uttar Pradesh.

Kachori is made from wheat flour and is mostly stuffed with dal or peas or a boiled vegetable of your choice. Sabji is a curry whish in UP generally comprises of potato or pumpkin. Sooji Halwa is a sweet dish made from semolina and milk boiled together and is often garnished with dry fruits.

There are several other traditional Indian breakfasts which you will be offered when you travel to different regions in India. Most of the dishes are made keeping in mind the weather conditions, seasons and the availability of the crops in the region. However, each of these dishes are delicious.
