“I would love to do a hardcore commercial film”- Bhumi Pednekar

Can Bhumi go beyond Content Driven cinemas?

Bhumi Pednekar Interview

Shubh Mangal Saavdhan actor Bhumi Pednekar started her acting career with a very unconventional role as an overweight woman in Dum Lagake Haisha, her second film, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha dealt with the issue of open defecation and now Shubh Mangal Saavdhan that released today deals with yet another problem of erectile dysfunction. All of the three films that Bhumi has been a part of were mostly content driven, which makes us wonder if Bhumi will go beyond content driven films?

In the midst of promoting Shubh Mangal Savaadhan, Bhumi was sweet enough to give HFT some time to answer some questions. There were some rumours about Bhumi acting snooty post the success of Toilet Ek Prem Kaatha, so we couldn’t help but ask her about the same. Laughing that infectious laughter, this is what she had to say: “Ma’am you’ve known me since so many years now, do you think I would ever behave that way? I don’t even know where it has come from but such rumours make me feel bad as it directly comments on the upbringing my parents have given me. It ‘s hurtful but we have to face such stuff.” We believe you Bhumi.

Coming back to her choosing mostly content driven films, she said that it’s the content driven films with a positive message and interesting characters that she finds interesting and finds it challenging enough to do. She feels that content driven films are the future. Also there is a huge change in cinema today and also in the audience. Today films and heroines are not only about glamour, the role of a heroine has gone far beyond adding just glamour to a film, that’s because the mindset of the audience has also changed. “The definition of commercial films has changed and I am glad we are a part of this beautiful change that has happened in our fraternity,” says Bhumi.

“I don’t really think we can say that Toilet Ek Prem Katha was just a content driven film and not a commercial film as it did about a business of about 130 crores and Dum Lagake Haisha which was made on a budget of 9 crores did business of around 32 crores so that too I would say was commercial enough. Now hopefully Shubh Mangal Savaadhan too will do equally well,” she justifies.
Bhumi says that she is instinctive when it comes to choosing her roles. “I am slightly more instinctive as an actor but I don’t have a set method of acting because I am still discovering myself and what works for me and what doesn’t. Also I don’t think one can have a set way of doing things. It’s just each day as it comes, each scene as it comes and every film is different by the end of the day. You also need the intelligence to know what works for you best.” She has certainly proved that hasn’t she?

Bhumi admits that she would love to do an out and out commercial with hardcore dance sequences etc. Being a huge Priyanka Chopra fan that she is, Bhumi can’t help but gush about Priyanka’s work when I ask her about what kind of roles would she like to do. “She was fantastic in Saat Khoon Maaf, Barfi, Kaaminey, Agneepath, I could just go on!” says Bhumi.

Even though Bhumi admits that she is open to doing hardcore commercial films she adds” BUT even then it has to have a sensible story to it, like Zubeida, Chandni Bar or Rang De Basanti.” We say point noted! Hope some filmmakers make a point of it too.
Here’s wishing this exceptionally talented actress, and the entire team of Shubh Mangal Savaadhan, huge success.
