A Job In A Different City Vs Current Relationship : How To Find Balance?

Work and relationships are two key pillars of your existence. While one lets you enjoy the luxuries of life, the other is needed to share those luxuries with. Most people find it difficult to maintain a balance between their work and relationship even when in the same city but your problems certainly double if you’re in two different places.

What do you choose when you are faced with the question of moving for a job or staying back for the current relationship?

Let’s look at the potential ways to tackle this issue :

1. Distance Is The Key

If you’re moving for a new job, is the location too far from where your significant other is? Distance matters in such cases, if it is possible for you guys to travel back and forth at least once a month, this is a workable situation. You may not be able to spend time every day but at least you get to meet each other at regular intervals. Did you know celebrity couple David Beckham and Victoria Beckham had to stay away from each other post years of marriage? After David was recruited by LA Galaxy in 2007 Victoria split her time between their LA and London homes since he remained in LA permanently.

2. What Phase Of Relationship Are You In?

If you’re newly hitched, it is going to be difficult to stay away, on the other hand, if you are a seasoned couple, you will know what your priorities are and will be supportive of moving for a better job than staying back for a relationship. In case you have been going through a rough patch, going farther away will only make things worse and hence you may want to stick together till things get sorted.

3. Communication Unlimited

If you do decide to live in separate cities because of your work commitments, make sure that there’s always enough communication happening from both ends. It could be simple texts or calls that guarantee the presence of the other person in your life irrespective of the physical distance.

4. Respect Deadlines & Professional Commitments

If an important project is up during your SO’s birthday, make sure that you make them understand how critical the problem is. In other cases, you could plan for leaves in advance for such occasions. Nevertheless, don’t take your work for granted or let your better half think it is something of lower importance.
